AS Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini was left seething after his team suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. The veteran coach did not hold back in criticizing the VAR officials, who he believes failed to award a crucial penalty for the Giallorossi.
A Tight and Intense Clash
The match between Genoa and Roma was fiercely contested from start to finish. Both sides displayed determination and tactical discipline, but it was Genoa who ultimately claimed the three points, leaving Roma frustrated and disappointed.
Despite the loss, Gasperini praised his team for their fighting spirit and disciplined performance throughout the game. The Roma players showed resilience, particularly in an away fixture where pressure was high and stakes were significant.
However, luck was not on Roma’s side. Key moments did not go in their favor, and they had to leave the Luigi Ferraris empty-handed, missing out on vital points in the Serie A title race.
Controversy Over Malinovskyi’s Handball
The most contentious moment came in the second half, with the score level at 1-1. Ruslan Malinovskyi, the Genoa midfielder, appeared to block a powerful shot from Roma’s Manu Kone using his right arm inside the penalty area.
The ball clearly struck his upper arm, but neither the referee on the field nor the VAR officials intervened. Gasperini was incredulous at the decision, stating that the incident was crystal clear on the replay footage and should have resulted in a penalty for Roma.
“The replay clearly shows the handball. I don’t understand why the referee and VAR didn’t act,” Gasperini said. “It was a genuine foul, and no alternative interpretation could justify ignoring it.”
Scathing Criticism of VAR Officials
Gasperini’s anger peaked during his post-match interview. He delivered a blistering critique of the VAR officials, calling their performance unacceptable.
“It was a very clear incident, yet VAR did not intervene at all,” he said. “Anyone who watched the replay can see the reality. The referee’s decision on the field changed the course of the match unfairly.”
The veteran coach even suggested that the VAR officials reconsider their careers. “If they are unsure about calls like this, perhaps they should find another job,” Gasperini added.
Shifting Focus to the Europa League
Despite feeling wronged, Gasperini urged his players to move on quickly. Roma face a critical Europa League round of 16 tie, traveling to Bologna for a decisive match to advance to the next stage.
With a tight fixture schedule, Gasperini stressed the importance of both physical and mental preparedness. “We must stay focused and maintain our winning mentality despite setbacks,” he said.
Roma will also need to fight for a top-four finish in Serie A, making upcoming victories essential not only for their European ambitions but also for maintaining the club’s prestige.
Looking Ahead
For Gasperini, the key challenge is ensuring his squad bounces back immediately. With Europa League clashes looming and Serie A battles against top teams ahead, the Giallorossi cannot afford to dwell on controversial moments.
The coach is confident that Roma’s resilience and discipline will be decisive in turning the season around, emphasizing that the team’s mentality will be as important as tactical execution in the upcoming weeks.
