SBOTOP Not an April Fools’ Joke: Italy Miss Out on World Cup… Again

Italy has suffered yet another crushing blow on the global football stage. The European giants have officially failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic play-off loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European qualifying final.

The tense clash took place at Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, early morning WIB. After 120 minutes of hard-fought action, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The outcome was then decided by a penalty shootout, where Bosnia kept their composure and secured a 4-1 victory, punching their ticket to the World Cup.

This defeat cements a painful record for Italy: for the first time in history, the Azzurri have missed three consecutive World Cups, having failed to qualify for both the 2018 tournament in Russia and the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Moise Kean’s Early Goal Couldn’t Save Italy

Italy started the match with hope and promise. Under the guidance of Gennaro Gattuso, the Azzurri struck first in the 15th minute through Moise Kean.

The goal came from a costly error by Bosnia’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, who failed to clear the ball effectively. Nicolo Barella seized the opportunity, gained possession, and delivered a precise pass to Kean, who hammered a powerful first-time shot into the corner of the net.

For a brief moment, Italy appeared to be in control, and the path to the World Cup seemed open.

However, disaster struck late in the first half. Defender Alessandro Bastoni received a straight red card in the 41st minute after bringing down Amar Memic in a one-on-one situation headed toward goal.

Playing with ten men turned the match upside down. Italy spent the remainder of the game defending desperately under constant pressure from Bosnia.

The visitors eventually capitalized, equalizing in the 79th minute. Haris Tabakovic pounced on a rebound after Edin Dzeko’s header was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, leveling the score at 1-1.

Italy’s World Cup Misery Continues

For Italy, this failure extends a troubling period of World Cup absences. The last time Gli Azzurri appeared at the tournament was in 2014 in Brazil.

They missed out on the 2018 World Cup after losing the play-off aggregate to Sweden, and four years later, suffered another shocking elimination at the hands of North Macedonia during the play-offs for Qatar 2022.

Now, the same story has repeated itself in Zenica. Italy once again faltered in the play-off, this time ending in a heart-wrenching penalty shootout defeat.

This is particularly bitter given Italy’s illustrious World Cup history. With four titles—1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006—the Azzurri have long been regarded as one of football’s most successful nations.

Yet in the past decade, that legacy no longer guarantees them a spot on the world’s biggest stage. The once-dominant Azzurri now face a period of reflection and rebuilding as they try to reclaim their place among football’s elite.

Looking Ahead

The defeat in Zenica highlights not just a single match’s failure, but broader structural issues within Italian football. From player development to tactical execution, the Azzurri must address these weaknesses to prevent another decade of disappointment on the global stage.

For now, Italy must come to terms with the bitter reality: the World Cup, once a given for one of the sport’s giants, has eluded them once more.
