SBOTOP: Atletico Madrid Chief Explodes Over VAR Controversy Against Barcelona

Atletico Madrid’s 1-2 loss to Barcelona last Saturday has left more than just a disappointing result—it has sparked a major controversy that continues to dominate headlines. The clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano is now under intense scrutiny due to a highly debated refereeing decision that many believe changed the course of the match.

The incident in question revolves around a red card initially shown to a Barcelona player, which was later overturned following a VAR review. This decision has triggered outrage within the Atletico camp, who feel they were unfairly treated during a crucial moment of the game.

Atletico Madrid Files Official Complaint Over VAR Decision

Unhappy with how the situation was handled, Atletico Madrid have reportedly submitted a formal complaint to Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees (CTA). The club believes the officiating lacked consistency and transparency, particularly regarding the use of VAR.

CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin did not hold back in expressing his frustration. Speaking publicly, he questioned whether the current VAR system is doing more harm than good to the integrity of football.

Harsh Criticism Toward Spanish Football Authorities

Gil Marin directed strong criticism at the Spanish Football Federation, especially after audio recordings from the VAR room were released. According to him, the recordings exposed poor coordination and raised serious concerns about how decisions are being made behind the scenes.

“When we watch the footage and listen to the audio shared by the Federation, the only thing it leaves is embarrassment,” Gil Marin stated.

“It is unacceptable that we are allowed to hear conversations that clearly contradict the proper use of VAR, yet nothing happens afterward.”

He acknowledged that referees, like players and coaches, can make mistakes. However, he drew a clear line when it comes to VAR intervention.

“Referees have every right to make errors—it’s part of the game. But what is not acceptable is when VAR officials influence the referee’s decision in a subjective way,” he added.

Questions Raised Over Changing VAR Standards

Atletico Madrid also highlighted the specific incident involving Gerard Martin and Thiago Almada. On the field, referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer initially issued a red card, only for it to be downgraded to a yellow after VAR intervention.

Gil Marin argued that VAR should only step in when there is a “clear and obvious error,” not to reinterpret situations that are open to subjective judgment.

“The on-field referee must take responsibility and make decisions based on their interpretation of the play,” he explained.
“VAR should be there to correct undeniable mistakes, not to replace the referee’s authority.”

He further expressed confusion over what appears to be shifting standards in officiating.

“It is completely abnormal that the criteria seem to change constantly, and we don’t know what to expect anymore. This has already happened to us in two consecutive matches. It simply makes no sense,” he said.

Inconsistency Fuels Atletico’s Frustration

The controversy deepened due to a similar case in another La Liga match. The CTA had previously stated that a comparable foul committed by Real Betis defender Valentin Gomez warranted a red card.

For Atletico Madrid, this inconsistency is at the heart of the issue. The club believes that different standards are being applied in similar situations, particularly in high-profile matches.

“And the worst part is that the CTA itself recently explained a similar incident and confirmed it should result in a red card,” Gil Marin pointed out.

“Yesterday, in an identical situation, the referee made the correct decision initially, but VAR created the mistake by overstepping its role. The guidelines given to players and coaches are clearly not being followed.”

Conclusion: VAR Under Fire Again

This latest controversy has reignited the debate over VAR’s role in modern football. While the technology was introduced to reduce errors, cases like Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona raise serious concerns about consistency, transparency, and authority on the pitch.

As pressure mounts on Spanish football authorities, Atletico Madrid are demanding answers—and possibly reforms—to ensure fairness in future matches. For now, however, the defeat still stings, and the controversy shows no signs of fading anytime soon.
