“Even now, just thinking about it excites me,” Manninger recalled.
“I was only 20, still very young. Wenger wanted to bring an international dimension to the club, and I was part of that vision.”
Despite his youth, Manninger felt comfortable and composed on the pitch.
“I always felt secure in goal because I had a warrior like Tony Adams in front of me. He taught me so much.”
Yet, despite the positive experience, Manninger admitted one major regret: leaving Arsenal too soon.
“My only regret is that I left too early. But at that time, I just wanted to play regularly,” he added.
Fiorentina Nightmare: Unpaid Wages and Financial Chaos
After departing Arsenal, Manninger sought more playing time and took a chance by moving to Serie A with Fiorentina. Unfortunately, the decision turned into one of the most difficult periods of his career.
The club was facing severe financial problems, and the situation quickly spiraled out of control. Players, including Manninger, went months without receiving their salaries, while uncertainty surrounded the team’s future.
“It was the wrong decision,” Manninger admitted honestly.
“The situation was unbelievable. This was in 2001, and the club was on the verge of bankruptcy. We weren’t paid for months.”
He also described the chaotic atmosphere within the club, even recalling moments when then-coach Roberto Mancini wasn’t sure if training sessions would go ahead.
“Mancini would sometimes say, ‘Who knows if we’ll even train tomorrow.’ He had just arrived, but we all knew everything could collapse at any moment.”
The experience left a lasting impression on Manninger, highlighting the risks players can face when clubs fall into financial instability.
Jurgen Klopp’s Call: A Surprise Move to Liverpool
Toward the end of his career, Manninger received an unexpected opportunity—joining Liverpool. The move came after a personal phone call from Jurgen Klopp, who had not forgotten Manninger’s impressive performances years earlier.
During his time at Augsburg, Manninger had delivered a standout display against Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund, denying them repeatedly and playing a key role in securing a victory.
“It all started with a phone call,” Manninger explained.
“Jurgen knew everything about me. Two years earlier, I had beaten his Dortmund side with Augsburg.”
Klopp’s admiration was clear from the beginning.
“He told me, ‘I want that goalkeeper here. That day, you saved everything against us—now I want you to do the same for me.’”
The call ultimately led to Manninger joining Liverpool, adding a remarkable final chapter to his long and diverse career.
