Instead, Allegri emphasized that Milan must now shift their focus toward securing a top-four finish and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
“The Scudetto race is no longer for us. Inter are nine points ahead, and we must be realistic,” Allegri said.
“Our focus now is to stay consistent and secure Champions League football.”
He also warned his players not to lose concentration, as the battle for the top four remains highly competitive.
Tactical Gamble Fails to Deliver in Attack
Allegri made a bold tactical decision by leaving key attackers Rafael Leão and Christian Pulisic on the bench. Instead, he opted to start Niclas Füllkrug alongside Christopher Nkunku, a pairing rarely seen this season.
While both players showed effort and work rate, they failed to provide a consistent attacking threat. Nkunku, in particular, had a few promising chances but lacked the finishing touch required at this level.
“Nkunku and Füllkrug worked hard and contributed to the team,” Allegri explained.
“Nkunku had some good opportunities, and players of his quality should be able to convert at least one of them.”
Allegri also revealed that injuries influenced his selection choices, particularly regarding Leão.
“Rafa is dealing with some physical issues after a strong start to the season. Our formation decisions depend heavily on player fitness.”
Politano’s Late Strike Decides a Tactical Battle
What was expected to be an open and entertaining clash instead turned into a cautious, tactical battle. Both teams prioritized defensive stability, resulting in a lack of attacking fluidity.
The decisive moment came when Koni De Winter failed to clear the ball properly inside the penalty area. The loose ball fell kindly to Matteo Politano, who reacted quickly and fired a precise volley past the goalkeeper.
Despite being well-positioned defensively, Milan failed to close down the space in time, allowing Politano to punish them.
“It was a game with very few chances,” Allegri admitted.
“Napoli did well to make the most of their moment. We needed to be sharper in the final third, especially in the second half.”
Title Hopes Fade as Pressure Mounts
The defeat not only widened the gap to Inter Milan but also increased pressure from teams below. Milan are now just six points ahead of fifth-placed Juventus, meaning their Champions League spot is far from secure.
With Napoli also moving ahead in the standings, Milan’s position in the top four is under threat if results do not improve quickly.
Allegri stressed the importance of maintaining focus for the remainder of the season:
“We must take it one game at a time. Nothing will be decided in just a week or two,” he said.
“Our goal is clear—we must qualify for the Champions League, and for that, we need to improve.”

AC Milan’s defeat to Napoli could prove to be a turning point in their season. With the Scudetto race effectively out of reach, the Rossoneri must now regroup and concentrate on securing a place among Europe’s elite.
Consistency, sharper finishing, and improved decision-making in key moments will be crucial if Allegri’s side wants to avoid further setbacks.
