The controversy surrounding West Ham United’s disallowed late goal against Arsenal is still dominating football discussions across England. Now, former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann has stepped into the debate with a bold proposal that could completely change how corner kicks are handled in the future.

Following Arsenal’s dramatic 1-0 victory at the London Stadium on Sunday night, Cann argued that football authorities should seriously consider introducing a brand-new rule aimed at reducing physical clashes inside the six-yard box.

The suggestion comes after one of the most controversial VAR moments of the Premier League season left West Ham furious, Arsenal relieved, and fans once again questioning the consistency of modern officiating.

With the Premier League title race and relegation battle both hanging in the balance, the incident has become far bigger than just one disallowed goal.

West Ham Thought They Had Stolen a Crucial Point

West Ham entered the match desperate for points as they continue fighting to avoid relegation.

Just when it looked like Arsenal would leave East London with all three points, Callum Wilson sparked wild celebrations inside the stadium by scoring a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer from a corner kick situation.

For several moments, it appeared West Ham had rescued a massive result against the league leaders.

However, the celebrations quickly turned into frustration after VAR launched a lengthy review of the goal.

After examining the incident, the officials ruled that West Ham player Pablo had committed a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya during the corner sequence. As a result, the goal was disallowed and Arsenal held on for a controversial 1-0 victory.

The decision immediately divided opinion among supporters, pundits, and former players across the country.

Many fans even described it as one of the most controversial VAR decisions since the technology was introduced into English football during the 2019/2020 season.

Premier League Explains the VAR Decision

Due to the massive backlash online, the Premier League later released an official explanation through social media regarding the overturned goal.

“After the VAR review, the referee overturned the on-field decision of goal for West Ham United,” the statement read.

“The referee’s announcement: Following the review, West Ham player number 19 committed a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision: direct free-kick.”

The explanation focused mainly on the physical contact involving David Raya inside the six-yard area.

Replay footage showed Pablo blocking Raya’s movement while Jean-Clair Todibo was also seen pulling the goalkeeper’s shirt during the aerial challenge.

Although many viewers felt the contact was minimal, officials concluded that the interference prevented Raya from properly contesting the ball.

Darren Cann Defends the Officials

Unlike many critics, former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann strongly defended the decision made by the officiating team.

Cann, who previously worked at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final and Champions League Final alongside former referee Howard Webb, insisted the correct call was made under the current rules.

“It’s a foul by Pablo because he’s holding David Raya’s arm and clearly stopping his movement,” Cann explained during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live.

“On top of that, his shirt is also being pulled by Jean-Clair Todibo.”

Cann admitted the timing of the decision made the situation especially painful for West Ham supporters, but he emphasized that the officials still had to apply the law correctly.

“It feels harsh because it happened at the end of the game, but it remains a foul. That’s the key point,” he added.

Why Cann Wants Corner Kick Rules Changed

Despite supporting the VAR decision, Cann believes the repeated controversies surrounding corner kicks show that football may need a rule adjustment.

Later speaking on Match of the Day, the former official proposed a significant change to how attacking players position themselves before corners are taken.

According to Cann, attacking players should no longer be allowed to stand inside the six-yard box before the ball becomes active.

“I think the time has come to change the law,” Cann said.

“No attacking players should be inside the six-yard area before the corner is taken.”

His idea is inspired by the existing rule for goal kicks, where attacking players must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is played.

Cann believes introducing a similar restriction during corners would create natural space around goalkeepers and reduce physical wrestling inside crowded penalty areas.

Reducing Physical Battles Inside the Box

One of Cann’s main concerns is the increasing amount of grappling, shirt-pulling, and blocking that happens before corner kicks are delivered.

Modern football has seen teams use increasingly aggressive tactics during set pieces, with players often engaging in heavy physical contact even before the ball enters play.

Cann argued that referees currently face a difficult situation because many of these clashes happen before the ball becomes active.

“There’s so much holding and wrestling before the corner is even taken,” he explained.

“The referee cannot award a penalty or indirect free-kick before the ball is in play.”

By preventing attacking players from entering the six-yard area early, Cann believes football could eliminate many controversial incidents entirely.

“It would create natural separation and give goalkeepers more freedom,” he said.

“Then we wouldn’t keep debating situations like this every week.”

Massive Consequences for Both Clubs

The disallowed equalizer could have enormous consequences for both Arsenal and West Ham as the season approaches its dramatic conclusion.

For West Ham, the defeat leaves the club dangerously close to relegation with only two matches remaining. Their survival hopes could suffer another major blow if Tottenham Hotspur defeat Leeds United in their upcoming fixture.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are now just two victories away from securing their first Premier League title since 2004.

Manchester City still have one game in hand, but Pep Guardiola’s side currently trail Arsenal by five points.

That reality has only increased the tension surrounding every major VAR decision involving the title race.

Whether fans agree or disagree with the officials, one thing is becoming increasingly clear — football’s conversation about VAR and set-piece rules is far from over.
