Manchester United have officially welcomed Andre Onana back to Old Trafford following the conclusion of his loan spell with Turkish side Trabzonspor on June 2, 2026. However, despite his return to the club, the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s future remains far from secure as uncertainty continues to surround his role in Michael Carrick’s plans for the upcoming campaign.
Although Onana remains under contract with Manchester United until the summer of 2028, multiple reports suggest that he is no longer considered a key part of the club’s long-term project. As a result, the Red Devils are reportedly exploring several options regarding his future, including the possibility of sending him out on loan once again or finding a permanent solution during the summer transfer window.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper is expected to report back for preseason training, which begins on July 8. Nevertheless, discussions between the player, his representatives, and the club hierarchy are anticipated to take place before the start of the 2026/27 season.
Trabzonspor Interested in Bringing Onana Back
Onana’s season in Turkey proved to be a positive chapter in his career. During his time with Trabzonspor, he made 30 appearances across all competitions and played an important role in helping the club secure the Turkish Super Cup.
His performances impressed both supporters and club officials, leading Trabzonspor to express interest in extending his stay. According to reports from Turkish media, the club has already initiated discussions regarding another loan deal for the experienced goalkeeper.
Trabzonspor are not the only club monitoring the situation. Turkish giants Besiktas have also been linked with a potential move for Onana. However, any transfer negotiations could be complicated by the player’s current salary package.
Sources indicate that Onana earns approximately £120,000 per week, a figure that remains difficult for many clubs outside the Premier League to match. His wages could ultimately become the biggest obstacle to securing a move away from Manchester.
Manchester United Planning Goalkeeping Reshuffle
Manchester United are expected to be active in the transfer market this summer, particularly when it comes to their goalkeeping department.
The club appears ready to make significant changes between the posts as Carrick continues to shape his squad ahead of a crucial season that includes a return to the UEFA Champions League.
Backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is widely expected to leave Old Trafford after attracting interest from Besiktas during the January transfer window. If the Turkish international departs, United will need to strengthen their depth in the position.
Meanwhile, one goalkeeper who has firmly established himself at the club is Senne Lammens. The highly-rated Belgian shot-stopper has enjoyed a remarkable rise since arriving from Royal Antwerp for a reported fee of around £18.2 million last September.
Lammens seized his opportunity after Onana fell out of favor following a difficult period that culminated in two costly errors during Manchester United’s shocking League Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town last August.
Since then, the young Belgian has become Carrick’s preferred choice and is widely expected to remain the club’s first-choice goalkeeper heading into the new season.
Salary Clause Complicates Potential Exit
One of the biggest challenges facing Manchester United and Andre Onana is finding a financial arrangement that works for all parties.
Last season, when United failed to qualify for European competition, a wage reduction clause reportedly came into effect, making it easier for Trabzonspor to accommodate the goalkeeper’s salary during his loan spell.
However, the situation has changed significantly.
Following Manchester United’s successful qualification for the UEFA Champions League, Onana is set to receive a contractual salary increase beginning on July 1. Reports suggest that his earnings will rise by approximately 25 percent, potentially making future negotiations even more complicated.
For interested clubs, matching those financial demands could prove difficult, especially in leagues where wage structures are considerably lower than those in England.
Competition at Old Trafford Growing Stronger
Onana also faces increasing competition within Manchester United’s squad.
The club recently extended the contract of veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton by another year. At 40 years old, Heaton remains a trusted presence in the dressing room and is expected to continue serving as the team’s third-choice goalkeeper.
In addition, United still have high hopes for Radek Vitek, whose contract runs until 2028. The 22-year-old Czech goalkeeper returns to Manchester full of confidence after a highly successful loan spell with Bristol City.
Club insiders believe Vitek is ready to challenge for the role of primary backup to Lammens next season, further reducing the likelihood of Onana reclaiming a prominent position within the squad.
A Crucial Summer Awaits Andre Onana
While Andre Onana has officially returned to Manchester United, his future at the club remains one of the biggest unanswered questions of the summer transfer window.
With Michael Carrick appearing committed to a new direction in the goalkeeping department, the former Inter Milan and Ajax star faces a difficult decision. He can either remain at Old Trafford and fight for a place in the squad or seek regular first-team football elsewhere.
As preseason approaches and transfer activity intensifies, the coming weeks are expected to be decisive in determining the next chapter of Onana’s career.
For now, he is back at Manchester United—but whether he will still be there when the 2026/27 season kicks off remains far from certain.
