Erling Haaland’s name has been linked with Real Madrid for years, but Michael Owen believes a move to the Spanish giants is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine.

The main reason is simple: Kylian Mbappe is already at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Haaland has repeatedly been mentioned as a potential future Real Madrid target. At one point, the Manchester City striker was even included in the plans discussed by Enrique Riquelme during his campaign for the Real Madrid presidency.

However, the situation has changed significantly.

Real Madrid now have Mbappe leading their attack, and the French superstar has quickly become one of the most important players in the squad. For Owen, that development makes a huge investment in Haaland much harder to justify.

As reported by Skinradar.gg, Owen believes Madrid would be reluctant to spend heavily on another elite striker while Mbappe remains at the club.

“While they have Mbappe, I can’t see them spending that kind of money,” Owen said.

Mbappe Could Be the Biggest Obstacle to Haaland

Haaland and Real Madrid may appear to be a natural match on paper. The Norwegian is one of the most prolific strikers in world football, while Madrid have a long history of signing the game’s biggest stars.

But Owen believes there is a major tactical issue that cannot be ignored.

Mbappe is most comfortable when he has freedom to operate from the left side of the attack. Haaland, meanwhile, is a classic central striker who is at his best when occupying the penalty area and playing through the middle.

That creates an obvious question: where would both players fit?

Owen pointed to the existing discussion surrounding Mbappe and Vinicius Junior as an example.

“People have already questioned whether Vinicius Junior and Mbappe can play together because Mbappe likes to drift a little bit to the left,” Owen explained.

He then raised the bigger issue involving Haaland.

“If it’s Mbappe and Haaland, how do you fit them in? Does Mbappe play from the left?”

The question highlights the tactical challenge Real Madrid would face if they attempted to bring the Manchester City striker to Spain.

Can Real Madrid Really Fit Two Elite No. 9s?

The potential combination of Haaland and Mbappe would undoubtedly be one of the most exciting attacking partnerships in football.

However, excitement does not automatically mean the system would work.

Both players are capable of deciding matches on their own, but building a balanced attack around them could be complicated.

Haaland prefers operating centrally, where he can use his physical strength, movement and finishing ability. Mbappe can also play centrally, although his pace and ability to attack from the left have been important parts of his game.

Owen therefore believes Real Madrid may ultimately have to choose between the two rather than attempt to accommodate both.

“I think it has to be one of them. Honestly, I don’t think you can have two players who can be considered two of the best centre-forwards in the world, Mbappe and Haaland, in the same squad,” he added.

That argument could become increasingly relevant if Haaland eventually becomes available.

Haaland Still Happy at Manchester City

The biggest factor, however, may not even be Real Madrid’s tactical plans.

Haaland himself has given little indication that he wants to leave Manchester City.

The Norway international remains under contract with the Premier League club until 2034, giving Manchester City a strong position whenever transfer speculation emerges.

Haaland has also publicly expressed his happiness at the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking to ESPN ahead of the Community Shield against Arsenal, the striker made his intentions clear.

“I am very happy and looking forward to what comes next because I think it is an exciting time for City as a club and also for me as a player. I am looking forward to continuing with City,” Haaland said.

Those comments provide a strong indication that the striker is focused on his future in Manchester rather than preparing for an imminent move to Spain.

Haaland Has Become a Manchester City Superstar

Since joining Manchester City in 2022, Haaland has established himself as one of the most dangerous goalscorers in European football.

His numbers speak for themselves.

The Norwegian has scored 162 goals in 198 appearances for Manchester City, while also helping the club collect major trophies under Pep Guardiola.

His achievements include:

  1. Premier League titles.
  2. UEFA Champions League success.
  3. FA Cup glory.
  4. Domestic trophies.
  5. A historic treble with Manchester City.

Those numbers explain why Real Madrid would be interested if the opportunity ever emerged.

At the same time, they also explain why Manchester City would have little reason to make negotiations easy.

Why a Real Madrid Move Looks Difficult

There are several reasons why Haaland’s potential move to Real Madrid appears complicated at this stage.

First, Madrid already have Mbappe, one of the world’s leading attacking players.

Second, Haaland’s contract with Manchester City runs until 2034, meaning City are not under immediate pressure to sell.

Third, Haaland has publicly stated that he is happy at the club.

Finally, there is the tactical question of whether Real Madrid actually need another central striker of Haaland’s profile.

The combination of transfer cost, squad balance and player preferences makes the situation far less straightforward than the rumors might suggest.

Haaland’s Real Madrid Dream May Have to Wait

Transfer stories involving Haaland and Real Madrid are unlikely to disappear completely. The Norwegian remains exactly the type of superstar the Spanish club has historically pursued.

However, the current circumstances are very different from previous years.

Mbappe is now the centerpiece of Madrid’s attack, while Haaland appears committed to Manchester City and has a long-term contract.

For now, Owen’s assessment makes sense: a Haaland move to Real Madrid would require several major pieces to fall into place.

Perhaps the biggest obstacle is already wearing the famous white shirt.

With Kylian Mbappe at the Santiago Bernabeu and Erling Haaland happy at Manchester City, a blockbuster transfer between the two clubs looks far more complicated than the rumors suggest.
