Gabriel Jesus has emerged as a strong candidate for Barcelona’s forward line after the club’s unsuccessful attempt to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. The talented Brazilian is expected to be acquired from Arsenal for approximately €10 million (around IDR 207 billion), a figure that could increase with performance-related bonuses. While this transfer might not have the star-studded marquee quality that Barcelona initially envisioned, Jesus represents a fitting profile that aligns with the tactical needs of manager Hansi Flick. His skills in pressing, intelligent movement off the ball, and versatility make him a valuable asset. Importantly, Barcelona does not need to view Jesus as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. Instead, he can serve as a temporary solution while the club searches for a forward to spearhead their attack for the coming years.

Jesus as a Tactical Asset

Barcelona’s interest in Jesus stems not from a quest for the world’s best striker but rather from the need for an experienced player who can fit into their system at a reasonable cost. At 29, Jesus boasts experience in both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Additionally, his tactical acumen, honed under managers like Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta, equips him to meet the modern game’s attacking demands. Jesus has a knack for receiving the ball in tight spaces, stretching defenses wide, and pulling center-backs out of position—qualities essential for a Barcelona side that thrives on dynamic attacking efforts alongside talents like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

One of Jesus’s standout skills lies in his ability to contribute defensively when his team is out of possession. Guardiola once praised him as “the best in the world” for his movements required to execute an intense pressing game. His statistics support this accolade, showcasing a high pressure and ball recoveries rate in the attacking third. In the 2025/26 season, he placed in the 95th percentile for successful pressures and ball recoveries while pressing, and the 97th percentile for counter-pressing. Such traits are crucial for Flick’s high defensive line strategy, allowing Jesus to be the first line of pressure against opponents, thereby giving Barcelona more opportunities to regain the ball in dangerous areas.

Creating Opportunities for Teammates

Importantly, Jesus doesn’t need to be the finisher of Barcelona’s attacks. His movement can create space and opportunities for those around him, enhancing their chances of scoring. Arteta has highlighted Jesus’s ability to “create unpredictability and space” through his mobility. This flexibility will enable Flick to deploy him as a central striker or on the wings, making him a multifaceted option against a variety of defensive setups. Jesus could even step in as a substitute for the final 25 minutes, providing high pressing energy when opposing defenses tire.

Barcelona can draw on their experience with the successful short-term transfer of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a precedent. The Gabonese striker transitioned from Arsenal in February 2022 amid skepticism but managed to net 13 goals in 24 competitive matches within just four months. Aubameyang then made way for Lewandowski, who was signed to fill the striking role permanently. Jesus has the potential to fulfill a similar role by offering a more significant tactical contribution beyond just goal-scoring.

However, one concern for Barcelona remains Jesus’s physical condition, as he has struggled with injuries over the past few years. He missed 319 days due to a knee ligament injury in 2025, resulting in the loss of 46 matches. Consequently, Barcelona will need to manage his playing time carefully. Should he maintain his fitness levels, there’s no requirement for Jesus to be Lewandowski’s successor to ensure the success of this transfer. Instead, becoming the next Aubameyang—a reliable interim solution while the club scouts for their future striker—would more than suffice.
