Cristiano Ronaldo faces a demanding start to Al Nassr’s AFC Champions League Elite 2026/2027 campaign.
Al Nassr are preparing for their opening match against Al Ain on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 23:00 WIB. The Saudi Arabian side will be hoping to begin their continental campaign with a positive result, but preparations have been complicated by a combination of injuries and player fatigue.
For Ronaldo, the challenge is even more significant. At 41, the Portugal captain remains one of the most important players in Ange Postecoglou’s squad and is expected to lead the attack despite Al Nassr losing several attacking options.
The match will take place at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium, Al Ain’s home ground in the United Arab Emirates.
Al Nassr Forced to Change Training Plans
Al Nassr travelled from Dammam to the United Arab Emirates ahead of their AFC Champions League Elite opener.
The team had already completed physical work in the gym and on the pitch on Sunday, September 13. However, the final training session on Monday did not go according to Postecoglou’s original plan.
According to Saudi media outlet Arriyadiyah, the Australian coach reduced the intensity of the session and focused primarily on light physical recovery.
The decision was made to manage the players’ fatigue rather than add another demanding tactical session to an already congested schedule.
Postecoglou also decided against conducting a full tactical simulation at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium. The training session lasted around 45 minutes as Al Nassr prioritised physical condition ahead of the important continental fixture.
The approach underlines just how concerned the coaching staff are about the players’ workload.
Al Nassr Face Four Games in 10 Days
The biggest issue facing Al Nassr is the number of matches packed into a short period.
The meeting with Al Ain will be their fourth game in just 10 days. Before travelling to the UAE, Ronaldo and his teammates had already played three domestic fixtures.
Their recent schedule included:
- September 5: Al Ittihad
- September 9: Abha
- September 12: Al Khaleej
- September 15: Al Ain
With only around two days of recovery between matches, the physical demands have been considerable.
The situation became even more apparent after Al Nassr drew 1-1 with Al Khaleej. Postecoglou acknowledged that fatigue had become a major concern across the squad.
He pointed to the demanding schedule as a factor affecting teams across the competition, noting that even Al Hilal had recently suffered a defeat against Neom.
For Al Nassr, managing energy levels will therefore be just as important as preparing tactically for Al Ain.
Injuries Leave Al Nassr Short of Attacking Options
Fatigue is not the only problem confronting Postecoglou.
Al Nassr will also be without three important attacking options for the trip to Al Ain.
French winger Kingsley Coman is unavailable because of injury, while local players Abdulrahman Ghareeb and Ayman Yahya are also ruled out.
Their absences significantly reduce Postecoglou’s options in the wide areas.
The timing is particularly difficult because Al Nassr had already chosen to field a strong lineup against Al Khaleej rather than heavily rotate the squad ahead of the Champions League Elite opener.
That decision has now left the coaching staff with fewer attacking alternatives for the first continental match.
The three absences mean the responsibility will fall even more heavily on the remaining attacking players.
Cristiano Ronaldo Remains the Main Figure
Despite the difficult circumstances, Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to start against Al Ain.
The Portugal captain remains the focal point of Al Nassr’s attack and will be relied upon to provide leadership and attacking quality in an important away fixture.
Ronaldo is expected to be joined in the starting attack by Sadio Mane and Joao Felix.
The trio will carry much of the responsibility in a match where Al Nassr cannot afford to allow their injury problems to disrupt their attacking ambitions.
Ronaldo’s experience could also prove particularly valuable.
AFC Champions League Elite matches require players to deal with different opponents, environments and tactical challenges. With Al Nassr entering the competition under significant physical pressure, having a player of Ronaldo’s experience leading the team could be crucial.
Postecoglou Faces a Difficult Balancing Act
For Postecoglou, the immediate challenge is finding the right balance between competitiveness and player protection.
Al Nassr are chasing success in both domestic and continental competitions, but the schedule is already testing the squad’s physical limits.
The coach therefore has to make difficult decisions about training intensity, tactical preparation and player selection.
Against Al Ain, three factors will be especially important:
- Managing fatigue after a demanding domestic schedule.
- Compensating for attacking injuries with limited wide options.
- Using Ronaldo, Mane and Felix effectively without placing unnecessary physical demands on the team.
The reduced training session suggests Postecoglou is already prioritising freshness over additional tactical work.
That could be a calculated decision. With several players carrying a heavy workload, arriving at kick-off in good physical condition may be more valuable than squeezing another intense training session into the schedule.
Ronaldo and Al Nassr Face an Early Test
Al Nassr’s AFC Champions League Elite campaign begins under circumstances that are far from ideal.
The squad is dealing with injuries, the players are coming off a congested run of domestic matches, and Postecoglou has already admitted concerns about fatigue.
Yet the club still has a strong attacking core.
Cristiano Ronaldo remains the headline figure, while Sadio Mane and Joao Felix are expected to support him against Al Ain. Their performance could determine whether Al Nassr can overcome the difficulties surrounding their preparation.
For Ronaldo, this is another opportunity to lead Al Nassr on the continental stage.
The road toward the AFC Champions League Elite title is only beginning, but the opening match against Al Ain has already presented a serious test of Al Nassr’s squad depth, fitness and resilience.
