Xavi Hernandez, the head coach of the Netherlands national team, openly acknowledged his tactical errors following a 2-2 draw against Greece during Matchday 3 of the UEFA Nations League Group A2 for the 2026/2027 season.

The match, held in Thessaloniki on the early morning of October 2, 2026, saw the Dutch team fall behind by two goals before halftime. The Netherlands’ defense struggled significantly, often losing their positioning while defending against Greek attacks, which allowed the home side to exploit gaps and score twice.

Second Half Turnaround for the Netherlands

However, the Netherlands significantly altered their approach in the second half. Captain Virgil van Dijk initiated the comeback with a well-placed header from a corner kick, reducing the deficit. As the match progressed, the team’s relentless pressure ultimately paid off when Tijjani Reijnders netted the equalizer right towards the end, rescuing the Netherlands from a potential loss.

Xavi did not shy away from confronting the subpar first-half performance. He took full responsibility, attributing the poor play to his failure in placing the players correctly on the field. Xavi emphasized that the team struggled to establish both tempo and rhythm, which hindered their ability to create goal-scoring opportunities, resulting in a 0-2 score at halftime.

“I am not happy with the outcome. We truly performed poorly in the first half,” Xavi stated in an interview with NOS. “It’s my fault. I didn’t position the players appropriately. There was no tempo or rhythm to our play,” he added.

Need for Creativity and Stability

Besides the positional issues, Xavi noted a lack of creativity from his players. He pointed out that there were too many changes in the team compared to their previous match, which disrupted their flow and coherence on the pitch. Nonetheless, the squad bounced back after the break, becoming more effective and finding the net twice to secure a crucial point.

“We did not perform well. We lacked sufficient creativity,” Xavi explained. “Fortunately, we managed to rectify that after halftime. Perhaps there were too many changes from the last match. That was my mistake,” he concurred.

As the team prepares for future matches, Xavi must focus on ensuring that his players understand their roles and responsibilities better, fostering a stronger collective effort on the pitch. The next challenge will involve building on this experience to enhance performance moving forward in the UEFA Nations League, as the Netherlands aims to solidify their position in the competition.
