Manchester United are going through another difficult period. A run of poor results has put manager Michael Carrick under growing pressure. But is the manager really the main reason behind the club’s struggles?

Carrick arrived at Old Trafford with fresh hope. After taking charge in January, he delivered strong results and gave the team a clearer playing style. He also earned the trust of several players and made some smart tactical changes.

Now, the situation looks very different. United have gone eight games without a win. They have also suffered two heavy defeats against teams seen as weaker opponents. Their poor form has raised serious doubts about Carrick’s future.

However, Manchester United’s problems go beyond the manager. Weak performances, an unbalanced squad, fitness concerns and poor defending have all played a part. Replacing Carrick may not be enough to fix these issues.

Michael Carrick Is Struggling to Find Answers

Carrick once looked like the right man to guide United through a difficult period. His early results gave fans reason to feel hopeful. He found a system that worked and made changes that helped the team.

But that progress has now faded. Carrick admits that he still needs to find a way to stop the decline.

“If I really had the answers, I wouldn’t let this happen,” Carrick said. He also explained that he had tried everything within his control to improve the team’s situation.

His recent tactical choices have raised more questions. Against Bournemouth, Carrick used a 3-4-3 formation. The system reminded many people of Ruben Amorim’s approach, but it failed to deliver the result United needed.

The decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench also drew attention. Fernandes had criticised the manager’s tactics before the match. This led to questions about the relationship between the two.

Carrick brought on Joshua Zirkzee and young player Shea Lacey before giving Fernandes a chance to return. The decision increased the pressure on the manager at a time when United needed strong leadership.

Still, one team selection cannot explain the club’s wider problems. United must look at the full picture before deciding what comes next.

Poor Player Performances Add to United’s Problems

Carrick deserves criticism for his decisions, but he is not the only one responsible. Several players have failed to deliver consistent performances this season.

Fernandes and Harry Maguire have both faced difficulties. Other players, including Senne Lammens, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Matheus Cunha, have also struggled to maintain their best form.

United have another concern: their lack of movement and energy. The team often struggles to keep up the pace needed to compete for the full 90 minutes.

This raises questions about the squad’s fitness and the quality of the club’s recruitment. A manager can change his tactics, but he still needs players who can carry out his plans.

United’s defence has also looked fragile. The team has conceded early goals in European matches and late goals in English competitions. Individual mistakes and poor set-piece defending have made matters worse.

The team has also allowed opponents to score twice in quick succession. In some matches, United have even conceded against teams reduced to 10 players.

These mistakes show that the problem is not just about formation. United need better focus, stronger defending and more consistent performances across the team.

Recruitment Has Left Carrick With Few Good Options

Manchester United’s squad lacks balance in several key positions. Sporting director Jason Wilcox has faced questions about whether the club has enough depth and quality to compete at the highest level.

Matheus Cunha, for example, has struggled when playing as a central striker. Benjamin Sesko has faced injury concerns, while Joshua Zirkzee has yet to make the impact many expected.

The left-back position presents another challenge. Luke Shaw is the squad’s natural option in that role, but his injury has forced the team to try other players. So far, United have struggled to find a reliable replacement.

Midfield has also become a problem area. Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo once looked like a promising partnership, but they are no longer regular partners.

The club also spent £155 million on a midfield rebuild led by Wilcox. Yet the results have not met expectations.

Carlos Baleba made a promising start before his form dropped. Tielemans has struggled in a midfield partnership and has since played in a more advanced role.

Andrey Santos has also found it hard to make a lasting impact. He started six matches, but United lost five of them.

These problems leave Carrick with limited choices. When a squad lacks balance, even a good tactical plan can fail. The manager must find a way to get results with the players available to him.

Would Sacking Michael Carrick Solve the Crisis?

Carrick’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain. His time at Middlesbrough also followed a pattern of strong early performances before results began to decline.

Even so, Manchester United had reasons to appoint him as interim manager. He collected 39 points from 17 matches during that spell. Those results gave the club a reason to consider him for the job.

The decision came from Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada. Firing Carrick just two months into the season could raise further questions about the club’s planning.

That does not mean Carrick should avoid blame. His tactics, team selections and recent results all deserve close review. United need a manager who can respond when the team faces a crisis.

But changing managers will not automatically fix the club’s deeper issues. United must also address several important areas:

  • Squad balance: The club needs stronger options in attack, at left-back and in midfield.

  • Fitness: Players must maintain their energy and movement throughout matches.

  • Defending: United must reduce individual errors and improve their work at set pieces.

  • Recruitment: New signings should fit the team’s playing style and long-term plans.

  • Leadership: Club officials need a clear strategy that does not change with every new manager.

Without progress in these areas, the same problems could return under another coach.

Manchester United Need a Long-Term Plan

Michael Carrick has yet to find a way to stop Manchester United’s decline. The team’s recent results have made the pressure on him understandable.

However, the club’s problems are much bigger than one manager. Poor defending, inconsistent performances, fitness concerns and an unbalanced squad have all contributed to the crisis.

A new manager might bring a short-term boost. But lasting success requires more than a change in the dugout.

United’s leaders must build a stronger squad, improve the team’s performances and follow a clear football strategy. They must also make sure the next manager has the players and support needed to succeed.

If Carrick loses his job, Manchester United will still face the same big question: does the club have a clear plan to end its cycle of poor results?
