Morgan Rogers delivered a standout performance as England U21s secured an impressive 4-1 win over Austria at Kenilworth Road in a friendly match. The victory also marked interim coach Ben Futcher’s first triumph in charge, a significant milestone as the team looks ahead to their upcoming 2025 European Championship qualifying campaign.

Rogers Opens the Scoring from the Spot

England U21s wasted no time asserting themselves in the match, with Morgan Rogers opening the scoring from the penalty spot. The 21-year-old winger, who has been in fine form for his club, showed his composure in the 19th minute when he coolly slotted the ball past the Austrian goalkeeper. The penalty came after a handball inside the box, and Rogers made no mistake, giving England an early lead.

Despite this bright start, Austria showed resilience, determined to fight back against their hosts. England, for all their dominance, were caught off guard by a quick counter-attack from Austria. Thierno Ballo, the Chelsea youth product currently playing for Wolfsberger AC, equalized for Austria in the 34th minute. Ballo’s strike came after a defensive lapse, as England failed to clear a long ball into the box, allowing him to pounce on the loose ball and level the score.

Futcher’s Tactical Adjustments Pay Off

After conceding the equalizer, England’s performance seemed to wane slightly, with Austria gaining confidence. Interim coach Ben Futcher, however, quickly made tactical adjustments that helped England regain control of the match in the second half. His decision to press higher up the pitch and allow his creative players to exploit the wings proved to be the game-changing strategy.

In the second half, England looked much sharper, especially going forward. Rogers, the standout performer, was once again at the center of the action. In the 55th minute, he scored his second goal of the game, restoring England’s lead. His clever movement off the ball created space for him to receive a low cross from Aaron Ramsey, and he calmly guided the ball into the net, making it 2-1.

Rogers’ second goal not only solidified England’s dominance but also showcased his versatility as a forward. His ability to both score and create opportunities for teammates makes him a key player for England’s future.

James McAtee and Tom Fellows Add to the Tally

With England back in control, it didn’t take long for them to extend their lead. Just 10 minutes after Rogers’ second strike, James McAtee added his name to the scoresheet. The Manchester City youngster, who has been a rising star for both club and country, scored a brilliant solo effort in the 65th minute. McAtee dribbled through the Austrian defense, showing great agility and vision before firing a low shot into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

McAtee’s goal all but sealed the victory for England, but they weren’t done yet. In the 78th minute, substitute Tom Fellows made it 4-1 with a well-taken finish. The West Bromwich Albion winger latched onto a through ball from Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and calmly slotted it home. Fellows’ goal was the icing on the cake for England, capping off a commanding second-half performance.
