The Scottish Football Association’s head of referees, Willie Collum, has expressed his belief that both Celtic and Dundee United should have been awarded penalties in recent matches, following his early-season assessment of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. As the head of referees in Scotland, Collum’s role is pivotal in overseeing the implementation of VAR and ensuring its correct application in the Scottish Premiership.

VAR Under the Microscope

Since the introduction of VAR in Scottish football, it has been both praised and criticized for its role in improving the accuracy of refereeing decisions. While many fans and pundits see it as a necessary tool to ensure fairness and precision, the system has faced its share of controversy, especially when it comes to subjective decisions like penalties. Collum’s remarks reflect the ongoing debate about the use of VAR and its impact on the outcome of key matches.

In his assessment, Collum has highlighted two specific incidents involving Celtic and Dundee United, where he believes penalties should have been awarded, but were not, even after review by the VAR system. The referee chief’s comments shed light on the complexities involved in making split-second decisions and how VAR, despite its benefits, is still subject to human interpretation and error.

Celtic’s Denied Penalty

One of the key moments in question occurred during a recent Celtic match, where the team was denied what appeared to be a clear penalty after a contentious challenge in the box. Celtic,  has been involved in numerous high-stakes games where decisions of this nature can often be decisive.

Willie Collum, in his evaluation, suggested that this decision was incorrect, noting that upon closer inspection, the Celtic player had been impeded unfairly. “When we looked at the footage again, it was clear that the challenge warranted a penalty,” Collum said. “It’s a case where VAR should have intervened, and I believe Celtic had a legitimate claim.”

This admission is likely to resonate with Celtic fans, who have been vocal in their criticism of the decision at the time. Collum’s comments not only validate their frustrations but also underscore the need for better consistency in the application of VAR in the league.

Dundee United’s Controversial Moment

Similarly, Dundee United found themselves on the wrong end of a controversial VAR decision early in the season. In a match where United was pushing for a crucial win, they were denied a penalty after what appeared to be a clear handball inside the box.

Collum’s assessment mirrored that of the Celtic situation, with the referee chief believing that VAR should have awarded a penalty in Dundee United’s favor. “In the Dundee United case, the handball was clear, and it’s a decision where VAR should have stepped in to correct the on-field referee’s call,” Collum explained. “The system is there to assist referees in situations like this, and unfortunately, it didn’t work as it should have.”

For Dundee United, this revelation may bring some comfort, but it also raises concerns about how many crucial points they may have lost due to incorrect officiating decisions. In a competitive league, every point matters, and the failure to award penalties can significantly impact a team’s season.
