Bradford City celebrated a much-needed 3-1 victory over Newport County at Valley Parade, marking their first league win in five games. After a closely contested first half, the Bantams’ second-half performance proved decisive, as they scored two crucial goals to secure all three points and lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

A Promising Start for Newport

Newport County arrived in Bradford with confidence, having secured back-to-back wins prior to this encounter. Their attacking threat was immediately evident, especially through towering striker Kyle Hudlin, who at 6ft 9in poses a significant challenge for defenders. The visitors began the match brightly, pushing forward and looking to capitalize on their recent form.

Bradford, however, quickly responded to the pressure, with Andy Cook coming close to opening the scoring. His header was well saved by Newport goalkeeper Nick Townsend, keeping the match level. Newport’s best opportunity of the first half came in the 32nd minute when Bobby Kamwa delivered a cross to Aaron Wildig at the far post. With the goal at his mercy, Wildig inexplicably scuffed the chance, failing to convert what should have been a straightforward finish.

As the first half drew to a close, Townsend continued to show his prowess, denying Jamie Walker’s attempt to put Bradford ahead. However, just before halftime, the Bantams found their breakthrough. In the 39th minute, Cook found the net with a powerful header from Jay Benn’s perfectly placed cross, giving Bradford a crucial lead as they headed into the break.

Second Half Begins with Intensity

With a goal to their name, Bradford emerged from halftime looking to build on their lead. However, Newport started the second half with renewed vigor. Kyle Hudlin nearly equalized with a powerful long-range shot that just missed the target, and Kieran Evans’ flicked header narrowly flashed past the post, adding to the tension in the stadium.

Despite Newport’s early pressure, Bradford’s defense held firm, and it was not long before the visitors found their equalizer. In the 65th minute, Evans managed to find Hudlin with a pinpoint cross, and the giant striker made no mistake, heading the ball past goalkeeper Sam Walker to level the score at 1-1. The Newport fans erupted as their team fought back to equalize, turning the match on its head.

Bradford Responds with Two Late Goals

With the match finely balanced, Bradford needed to respond quickly to avoid another disappointing result. Just ten minutes after Newport’s equalizer, the Bantams regained their lead. Jamie Walker was in the right place at the right time, converting a cross from Bobby Pointon. The ball took a deflection on its way to Walker, but the forward showed excellent composure to slot it into the back of the net, restoring Bradford’s advantage at 2-1.

The home side’s confidence surged, and they began to exert control over the match. Bradford’s relentless attacking play paid off again in the closing stages. They pushed forward with determination, and their efforts were rewarded when Cook found the net for his second goal of the match in the 85th minute, extending their lead to 3-1.

Defensive Frustration for Newport

As the match neared its conclusion, Newport found themselves in a challenging position. Despite their earlier promise, they struggled to create clear chances in the final moments. Bradford’s defense, bolstered by the newfound confidence from their attacking display, managed to snuff out Newport’s attempts to get back into the game.

Head coach Graham Coughlan will be frustrated by the missed opportunities that characterized Newport’s performance, particularly the crucial chance in the first half when they could have taken the lead. Their inability to convert chances proved costly, as Bradford capitalized on their defensive lapses to secure a vital win.
