Mathew Baker, an Australian-born defender who plays for Melbourne City U-18, is the only overseas-based player called up to represent Indonesia U-17 in the upcoming AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2025 in Saudi Arabia. Coach Nova Arianto has finalized the 25-man squad, with Baker being one of the most notable names on the list.
Baker’s Crucial Role in Indonesia U-17’s Defense
Since last year, Baker has been a key player for Indonesia U-17 and was even previously called up to join the U-20 squad in preparation for the 2025 AFC U-20 Asian Cup. Though primarily a full-back, Baker’s versatility allows him to also operate as a center-back or central midfielder, making him a vital component in the team’s tactical setup.

Baker himself expressed confidence in his readiness to face tough competition at the tournament. After a smooth recovery, he now joins forces in defense with teammates I Putu Apriawan, Daniel Alfrido, and Fabio Azka Irawan.
“I feel in top condition. After my recovery, I feel stronger and more focused,” said Baker.
“I’m genuinely excited to showcase my abilities in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup. The atmosphere here feels similar to Australia, so it almost feels like home.”
Excitement Ahead of the South Korea Clash
Mathew Baker is especially looking forward to Indonesia’s opening Group C match against South Korea on Friday (April 4) at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah.
“I’m really excited to play. As a team, we’re 100% ready, and personally, I can’t wait to show what we’re capable of on the pitch,” Baker said.
“Even though we know the opening match will be tough, I believe in our preparation and am confident we can achieve a satisfying result.”
