Manchester United produced a stirring response to their disappointing opening-weekend defeat by coming from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, with captain Bruno Fernandes delivering a sensational hat-trick to inspire Michael Carrick’s side to their first Premier League victory of the season.
The Red Devils endured an uncomfortable opening half against an adventurous Ipswich side and found themselves trailing after Leif Davis opened the scoring in the 29th minute. For a brief period, United looked vulnerable against another newly promoted opponent following their defeat to Hull City.
But Fernandes changed everything.
The Portuguese midfielder levelled the contest shortly before half-time before taking complete control of the match after the interval. Jacob Greaves’ own goal put United ahead, Fernandes converted a penalty to extend the advantage, and the captain then completed his hat-trick with a close-range finish.
Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth goal in the 82nd minute, with Fernandes once again involved by providing the assist. Ipswich substitute Chuba Akpom scored a late consolation, but there was never any serious doubt that United would collect all three points by that stage.
The victory represented much more than three points for Carrick’s team. After an alarming defeat at Hull, United needed an immediate response, particularly with another promoted side arriving at Old Trafford.
They received exactly that, although the performance was far from perfect.

It was only the second Premier League hat-trick of Fernandes’ career. His previous treble came against Leeds United in the opening home game of the 2021-22 campaign, meaning both of his Premier League hat-tricks have arrived in United’s first home league fixture of a season.
The achievement was particularly significant because Fernandes had been named PFA Player of the Year only five days earlier.
Rather than allowing the individual recognition to distract him, he responded with one of his most influential performances in a United shirt.
His display demonstrated why he remains such a central figure in the club’s ambitions.
Mbeumo Adds a Fifth
United were not satisfied with four.
The fifth goal arrived in the 82nd minute and once again involved Fernandes.
The captain spotted Bryan Mbeumo making a run beyond the Ipswich defence and delivered a perfectly weighted long ball.
Mbeumo raced onto it as Scherpen advanced from his goal.
The United forward lifted his effort over the goalkeeper.
The ball struck the crossbar before bouncing over the line.
It was a fitting conclusion to an outstanding attacking display from United.
Fernandes had now contributed to four of his team’s goals: three himself and one assist.
Opta’s analysis confirmed that it was the first time in his career that Fernandes had been directly involved in four Premier League goals in a single match.
The match had become a celebration.
The nervousness of the first half was gone.
Old Trafford was enjoying the sight of its captain producing another memorable performance.
Ipswich Refuse to Give Up
Despite the scoreline, Ipswich continued to fight.
O’Neil’s players had shown courage throughout the afternoon and refused to abandon their attacking approach even after United had established a four-goal advantage.
That persistence was rewarded in stoppage time.
Chuba Akpom scored in the 90th minute plus one to reduce the deficit to 5-2.
The goal offered little hope of a comeback, but it provided a deserved reward for Ipswich’s determination.
The visitors had competed aggressively and caused United problems for long stretches.

His passing range, vision and ability to produce assists have long been among his greatest strengths.
But against Ipswich, he became the primary goal threat.

His second was a penalty.
His third arrived from close range.
Then he assisted Mbeumo.
That variety made the performance especially impressive.
It also illustrated how Carrick’s tactical approach can benefit from allowing Fernandes freedom in advanced areas.
Rather than forcing the midfielder to remain in a rigid position, United were able to move him into dangerous spaces where he could receive the ball closer to goal.
That freedom created problems for Ipswich.
Once Fernandes found confidence, the visitors struggled to contain him.

For Carrick, the victory was important on several levels.
The manager had faced criticism following the opening-day defeat at Hull.
United’s performance in that match had lacked the intensity and attacking quality expected from the club.
Against Ipswich, the response was immediate.
Carrick made four changes to the starting lineup, bringing in Lisandro Martínez, Diogo Dalot, Kobbie Mainoo and Rashford. The decision to restore Rashford to the starting XI was particularly significant because it represented his first league start for United since December 2024.
The forward did not score, but his involvement offered encouragement.
Mainoo also impressed in midfield as United gradually took control of the game.
The biggest difference, however, was the collective reaction after conceding.
Instead of losing confidence, United increased their attacking pressure.
