Manchester United finally found their winning touch in the 2026/27 Premier League season as they recovered from an early setback to defeat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes grabbing the headlines and Kobbie Mainoo producing a performance that quietly underpinned the dramatic comeback.
Fernandes was undoubtedly the star of the afternoon. The United captain scored three times, including a penalty, and also created Bryan Mbeumo’s late goal as Michael Carrick’s side turned a difficult opening hour into an emphatic victory.
But while Fernandes supplied the goals and decisive moments, Mainoo provided something equally important in midfield.
Recalled to the starting XI after United’s disappointing opening-day defeat to Hull City, the 21-year-old midfielder displayed composure, physical strength and intelligence in possession. His ability to carry the ball through midfield and connect United’s defensive and attacking phases helped change the rhythm of the match.
