Barcelona’s journey in the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League has come to a disappointing end. Hansi Flick’s side was knocked out in the quarterfinals after suffering a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid, despite winning the second leg 2-1 on Wednesday (April 15, 2026).

The decisive moment came from Ademola Lookman’s crucial first-half goal, which ultimately tilted the tie in Atletico’s favor. This result also extends Barcelona’s frustrating record in Europe, as they have now failed to reach the Champions League semifinals for seven consecutive years.

Despite the elimination, Flick remained confident in his team’s overall performance, insisting that Barcelona were the better side across both legs.

Flick Questions the Result: “We Deserved to Go Through”

Speaking after the match, Hansi Flick expressed disappointment with the outcome, suggesting that the final scoreline did not truly reflect how the games unfolded.

The German coach highlighted Barcelona’s strong first-half display in the second leg, where his team showed intensity, control, and attacking quality. However, one decisive moment allowed Atletico to score, shifting the momentum entirely.

“If you look at both matches, we deserved to be in the semifinals. We played an outstanding first half, but their goal came unexpectedly,” Flick told reporters.

He also pointed to inefficiency in front of goal as a key issue. While Barcelona dominated large portions of the game, their inability to convert chances proved costly in the end.

Missed Opportunities Cost Barcelona

Barcelona started the second leg in explosive fashion, quickly taking a 2-0 lead and leveling the aggregate score. At that point, they looked firmly in control and on track to complete a comeback.

However, failing to extend that advantage allowed Atletico Madrid to stay alive. Lookman’s goal not only shifted the aggregate score but also forced Barcelona into a more desperate approach.

As the match progressed, Barcelona continued to push forward, but their finishing lacked the clinical edge required at this level. The turning point became even more evident when momentum slipped away after key moments didn’t go in their favor.

Focus Shifts to La Liga Title Race

Following their Champions League exit, Barcelona must now quickly regroup and turn their attention to domestic competitions—particularly La Liga.

Flick emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and a winning mentality as the team aims to secure the league title. Barcelona currently sit at the top of the table with a nine-point advantage, putting them in a strong position heading into the final stretch of the season.

“Of course we are disappointed. Winning the Champions League is a dream for everyone. But we have a young team, and we will continue to improve next season,” Flick stated.

When asked about the possibility of clinching the title during El Clasico, Flick downplayed the importance of timing, stressing that securing the trophy itself is what truly matters.

Confidence in Barcelona’s Young Squad

Despite the setback, Flick expressed pride in his squad—particularly the younger players who continue to show growth and resilience on the big stage.

One of the controversial moments in the match was Eric Garcia’s red card, which significantly impacted Barcelona’s chances late in the game. However, Flick chose not to dwell on refereeing decisions.

“I don’t want to talk about that. We have to accept it. We will analyze everything, and this young team will take a step forward from this experience,” he said.

Barcelona will return to La Liga action next week, hosting Celta Vigo at Camp Nou. A victory will be crucial as they aim to maintain their lead and stay firmly on track for the domestic title.
