Michael Carrick has officially committed his future to Manchester United after signing a new two-year contract extension, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2028. The former Red Devils midfielder is now fully focused on leading the club back to the top of English and European football.
Carrick took charge of Manchester United earlier this year following the departure of Ruben Amorim in January. Since stepping into the role, the 44-year-old has managed to transform the team’s performances while also rebuilding confidence inside the dressing room.
Under Carrick’s leadership, Manchester United secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League ahead of schedule and eventually finished third in the Premier League standings. The Red Devils also ended their final home match of the season on a high note with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
Impressed by the progress made in a short period, Manchester United’s board decided to reward Carrick with a long-term contract extension. Reports also suggest that several members of his coaching staff will remain alongside him as part of the club’s rebuilding project.
Michael Carrick Determined to Restore Manchester United’s Winning Mentality
Since taking over midway through the season, Carrick has overseen a significant improvement in results and team chemistry. In just 16 matches, he guided Manchester United to 11 victories, helping stabilize the club after a turbulent first half of the campaign.
Despite securing a top-three finish and Champions League football, Carrick believes Manchester United should aim much higher.
The former England international insists the club’s ambition must always be centered around winning major trophies and competing with Europe’s elite once again.
“It’s good to make progress, it’s good to qualify for the Champions League, and it’s good to finish third,” Carrick told the club’s official media.
“But I want to make this place even better. Manchester United should always aim for more.”
Carrick also admitted he has noticed a major shift in the atmosphere around Old Trafford in recent weeks.
“Last Sunday at the stadium felt different. There was togetherness and genuine excitement from everyone connected to the club, and that means a lot to me,” he added.
Carrick Wants to Deliver Silverware to Manchester United Fans
One of Carrick’s biggest motivations is bringing success back to Manchester United supporters, who have waited years to see the club consistently challenge for the biggest trophies again.
The former midfielder believes the renewed positivity surrounding the team can become the foundation for a stronger future.
According to Carrick, Manchester United must always carry the mentality of a club that expects to win titles, regardless of the challenges ahead.
“Supporting Manchester United should always come with excitement and belief about what this club can achieve,” Carrick explained.
“That drive to win trophies has to remain part of the identity of this football club.”
He also emphasized how special it would be to reward the fans for their loyalty and patience throughout difficult periods in recent years.
“For us to give something back to the supporters would be incredibly special,” Carrick said.
Premier League Title Is Carrick’s Ultimate Goal
Carrick’s new contract runs until 2028 — the same timeline in which Manchester United co-owner Ineos reportedly hopes to see the club crowned Premier League champions again.
The Red Devils last won the league title in 2013 under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Interestingly, Carrick was part of that title-winning squad as a player and now has the opportunity to achieve history by winning the Premier League both as a player and as a manager with Manchester United.
When asked about the possibility of leading United back to league glory, Carrick made his ambitions crystal clear.
“I’d take that right now,” he said confidently.
“That’s the target, and I have to believe in it. That’s what we should be aiming for as a club.”
Carrick concluded by expressing his desire to see Manchester United once again competing at the highest level both domestically and in Europe.
“It would be incredible to see this club lifting trophies again, winning the league, and competing deep in the Champions League,” he concluded.
A New Era Beginning at Old Trafford?
With a renewed sense of unity, Champions League football secured, and a manager who understands the club’s culture deeply, Manchester United supporters are beginning to believe that a new era may finally be taking shape at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick now faces the biggest challenge of his managerial career — bringing Manchester United back to where the club believes it belongs: at the summit of the Premier League.
