Real Madrid are preparing for another decisive round of contract negotiations with Vinicius Junior as the club attempts to secure the Brazilian forward’s long-term future without disrupting the financial balance among its leading stars.
Vinicius is contracted until June 30, 2027, under the extension officially announced by Real Madrid in October 2023. Although that agreement still covers the coming season, the situation has become increasingly urgent because reports indicate that he could begin negotiating with foreign clubs from January 2027 unless fresh terms are agreed.
Talks are expected to resume later in July following Vinicius’ post-World Cup holiday. Both the player and the club are reportedly interested in continuing their relationship, but the financial details remain the central obstacle.
The latest reports claim Vinicius is seeking a salary worth approximately €20 million net per season. Such a package would place him at or near the top of Madrid’s wage structure and ensure that his compensation reflects his status as one of the team’s most influential players.
Madrid’s difficulty is not simply deciding whether Vinicius deserves improved terms. Club president Florentino Perez and chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez must consider how any agreement would affect Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and the other senior members of a squad filled with international stars.
The negotiations are therefore about more than one player’s salary. They concern hierarchy, recognition and Madrid’s long-standing principle that the institution must remain more powerful than any individual.
Vinicius Wants His Status Reflected in His Contract
Vinicius’ reported demands are understandable when viewed through the development of his Real Madrid career.
He arrived from Flamengo as a teenager in 2018 and gradually transformed from a talented but inconsistent winger into one of Europe’s most decisive attackers. He scored the winning goal in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool and contributed another goal in Madrid’s 2024 final victory over Borussia Dortmund.
His importance has grown through performances in the biggest matches, not merely through reputation.
Real Madrid’s official announcement of his previous renewal described him as one of the club’s most influential players and highlighted the decisive role he had already played in major trophy successes.
Since then, his position has become even stronger. He has developed into a leading figure for both Madrid and Brazil, inherited the club’s famous No.7 shirt and become one of the most recognisable footballers in the world.
From the player’s perspective, the next contract should acknowledge that transformation.
A young prospect may accept a progressive agreement designed around future potential. An established star expects to be paid in line with his current influence, commercial value and importance to the sporting project.
Reports suggest Vinicius wants a salary in the region of €20 million net annually. However, no official figure has been confirmed by Real Madrid or the player’s representatives, and estimates surrounding the club’s highest earners regularly differ between publications.
The reported request nevertheless establishes the central principle of his negotiating position: Vinicius wants to be treated as one of Madrid’s leading Galacticos, not as a secondary figure beneath the club’s newer arrivals.
Real Madrid Must Protect the Dressing-Room Balance
Madrid’s hesitation is not necessarily evidence that the club undervalues Vinicius Junior.
The problem is the precedent that could be created by placing one player clearly above the rest of the squad.
A football club’s salary structure is rarely judged only by financial executives. Players, agents and representatives constantly compare contracts, bonuses and status. A major increase for one star can quickly influence negotiations involving several others.
Reports claim Madrid are concerned that meeting Vinicius’ full demands could create tension with Mbappe and Bellingham. Both are central to the club’s sporting and commercial future, and neither would expect to be treated as less important than another attacker.
That does not mean the three players are engaged in a personal dispute.
The concern is structural. Once Madrid establish a new highest salary, that figure becomes a reference point. Mbappe’s representatives could argue that the French captain remains the team’s most productive goalscorer and internationally valuable player. Bellingham’s camp could point to his age, performances and importance in midfield.
Other players may then make similar comparisons.
Madrid therefore want to reward Vinicius without creating an uncontrolled rise in salaries across the squad.
This balance is particularly important for a club that promotes the idea of collective ambition. The Bernabeu has always welcomed superstars, but those stars are expected to operate within a structure shaped by the club rather than individual demands.
Comparing Vinicius and Mbappe’s Salaries Is Complicated
Much of the public discussion has focused on whether Vinicius should earn as much as Mbappe.
The comparison appears simple but is more complicated than it first seems.
Mbappe joined Real Madrid in 2024 without a transfer fee after his Paris Saint-Germain contract expired. Free transfers involving elite players often include large signing bonuses and other payments that are separate from the basic annual salary.
Vinicius, by contrast, joined Madrid through a conventional transfer and has progressed through several stages of the club’s salary structure.
Reuters reported in February 2025 that Vinicius’ earnings had risen to approximately €18 million annually, placing him in a similar range to Mbappe. That report came while Madrid were optimistic that a new extension could be completed.
More recent Spanish reports have described Vinicius’ current contract as progressive, beginning at a lower annual amount and increasing toward approximately €17 million net, with additional bonuses connected to individual awards. Those figures differ slightly from other estimates, demonstrating why salary comparisons should be treated cautiously.
The key issue may therefore be total compensation rather than basic wages.
Mbappe’s signing package, loyalty payments and commercial arrangements could make his overall earnings significantly different from his listed salary. Vinicius may want a contract that closes that broader gap while still reflecting the years of service he has already given Madrid.
From his perspective, he did not arrive as a finished superstar. He developed at the club, survived difficult periods and became decisive in two Champions League-winning campaigns.
That history forms an important part of his case.
Bellingham Adds Another Layer to the Negotiations
Bellingham’s presence makes the wage discussion even more delicate.
The England midfielder joined Madrid in 2023 and immediately became one of the most important players in the team. His goals, leadership and ability to influence several areas of the pitch quickly established him as another face of the club’s long-term project.
Spanish reports have previously suggested that Madrid were considering reviewing Bellingham’s terms as part of their wider planning for the squad’s leading players.
The club must therefore avoid negotiating Vinicius’ renewal in isolation.
An agreement that gives the Brazilian a dramatic financial advantage could strengthen Bellingham’s case for improved terms. An offer that leaves Vinicius clearly below both Mbappe and Bellingham could make the winger feel his contribution has not been properly recognised.
Madrid’s challenge is to create a hierarchy that feels understandable even when the exact salaries are not identical.
That hierarchy may include performance bonuses, image-rights arrangements, signing payments and loyalty incentives. Two players can receive similar total compensation through very different contractual structures.
Madrid could therefore satisfy Vinicius without simply copying Mbappe’s agreement.
A carefully designed package might increase the Brazilian’s guaranteed salary while offering substantial bonuses for appearances, goals, trophies and individual awards.
Such an arrangement would protect the club’s fixed wage bill while giving Vinicius a realistic path toward becoming one of the highest earners.
Vinicius Still Has Considerable Negotiating Power
Although his current contract has less than a year remaining, Vinicius remains in a strong position.
Real Madrid do not want to lose an elite attacker without receiving a transfer fee. The longer negotiations continue, the more leverage gradually moves toward the player.
Reports indicate that Vinicius intends to remain at Madrid for the 2026-27 season even if a renewal is not immediately completed. His preference is believed to be staying at the Bernabeu, but he could leave as a free agent in 2027 if the two sides fail to reach an agreement.
That possibility would be deeply uncomfortable for Madrid.
The club have previously benefited from signing major players at the end of their contracts. Mbappe’s departure from PSG demonstrated the power held by a superstar approaching free agency.
Madrid would not want to experience the same situation from the opposite side.
Selling Vinicius during the current window would protect the club financially, but there has been little indication that Madrid are actively seeking a transfer. Recent reports instead describe optimism surrounding a meeting planned for late July.
Both parties therefore possess reasons to compromise.
Vinicius can use the approaching end of his contract to seek better terms. Madrid can use the player’s stated desire to remain as evidence that an agreement does not need to break the club’s financial rules.
Saudi Interest Remains Part of the Background
The possibility of interest from Saudi Arabia has followed Vinicius during previous rounds of negotiations.
Reuters reported in 2025 that Saudi representatives had approached Real Madrid regarding the Brazilian. Madrid referred to the €1 billion release clause in his contract, while sources close to the player said no formal personal offer had been presented at that stage.
The reported Saudi interest strengthened Vinicius’ negotiating position because it demonstrated the extraordinary financial value placed on him outside Europe.
However, the player repeatedly expressed a desire to remain in Madrid and continue building his legacy at the club.
That ambition remains important.
A contract negotiation is not automatically a sign that Vinicius wants to leave. Elite players often seek improved terms precisely because they intend to remain and want their status formalised.
Madrid must distinguish between financial ambition and disloyalty.
Vinicius is entitled to assess his market value. The club is equally entitled to protect its salary structure. The negotiation becomes dangerous only when either side begins treating compromise as defeat.
Sporting Questions Could Influence the Final Agreement
Money is central to the talks, but Vinicius’ sporting role may also influence his decision.
The arrival of Mbappe changed the balance of Madrid’s attack. Both players naturally favour areas on the left, even though Mbappe can operate centrally and Vinicius can move across the front line.
Madrid have spent considerable time searching for the best system to combine Vinicius, Mbappe and Bellingham. Reports in Spain have described the trio as the central attacking foundation of the club’s project, while acknowledging that the ideal tactical balance has not always been achieved.
Vinicius will want confidence that he remains essential.
An improved salary offers financial recognition, but his role on the pitch may matter just as much. He will not want to become a supporting player whose main responsibility is creating space for Mbappe.
The Brazilian’s most effective football has come when he is trusted to receive possession frequently, attack defenders and influence decisive moments.
Madrid’s next coach must therefore construct an attack in which all three leading stars retain responsibility.
A renewal could include no formal tactical guarantees, but the discussions are likely to cover the club’s vision. Vinicius will want to understand how Madrid intend to use him and whether he remains one of the faces around whom the team is being built.
