Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has admitted he was deeply disappointed after his side suffered a heavy defeat to Arsenal in the 2026 Community Shield. Despite the disappointing result, the Italian coach has promised that his team will use the setback as motivation to improve ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Manchester City faced Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in the traditional curtain-raiser ahead of the 2026/2027 season. The encounter was expected to be a closely contested battle between two of England’s top sides.

However, the match turned out to be far more one-sided than many had anticipated. Arsenal produced an impressive performance and secured a convincing 3-0 victory, leaving City with plenty of concerns to address before the Premier League season officially gets underway.

Maresca did not hide his disappointment after the final whistle, but he insisted that the result would not define Manchester City’s season.

“Of course, I am disappointed with the result today,” Maresca said during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live.

Early Goal Changed the Entire Game

According to Maresca, Arsenal’s opening goal had a major influence on the way the match developed.

Riccardo Calafiori stunned Manchester City by finding the back of the net just 25 seconds after kick-off. The incredibly early goal immediately changed the momentum of the contest and forced City to adjust their approach much earlier than expected.

Maresca believes the early setback affected his players mentally and made their task considerably more difficult.

“I think the first goal, which came after just 25 seconds, had a big impact on the game. After that goal, the situation became much more difficult for us,” the City boss explained.

Despite conceding so early, Manchester City managed to respond positively for a period. The Cityzens created several promising opportunities and could have restored parity before Arsenal extended their advantage.

“We reacted well before they scored the second goal. We created around three or four chances to score and we could have made it 1-1,” Maresca added.

“But then they scored the second goal and the situation became much more complicated for us.”

The second Arsenal goal proved to be another crucial turning point. Once the Gunners established a two-goal cushion, City struggled to regain control of the contest, while Arsenal grew increasingly confident.

Maresca Admits City Still Have Plenty to Improve

Although the Community Shield is not a competitive Premier League fixture, the heavy defeat has highlighted several areas Manchester City will need to address before the new campaign begins.

Maresca acknowledged that his side’s overall performance was below the required standard. Rather than making excuses, however, the manager emphasized that the team still has time to work on its weaknesses.

“Yes, we have many things to improve. The new season is about to start, and there are a lot of things we need to improve in our performance,” Maresca stated.

The manager also made it clear that his attention has already shifted toward the Premier League. Manchester City cannot afford to dwell on the Community Shield result, particularly with the opening league fixture arriving shortly.

“Our focus from next week will be the Premier League. We will try to play better, and we will continue working to improve our performances going forward,” Maresca concluded.

Manchester City Must Respond Quickly

The Community Shield defeat will undoubtedly raise questions about Manchester City’s readiness for the 2026/2027 campaign. A 3-0 loss to Arsenal is not the result Maresca would have wanted, especially with the Premier League season just around the corner.

However, the defeat also provides the coaching staff with an opportunity to identify weaknesses before the matches that matter most begin.

Manchester City will need to improve their defensive organization, become more clinical in front of goal and show greater resilience when conceding early. The reaction to setbacks could prove particularly important over the course of a long Premier League campaign.

For Maresca, the immediate priority is ensuring that his players learn from the Community Shield experience rather than allowing the defeat to affect their confidence.

Cityzens Face Bournemouth in Premier League Opener

Manchester City’s first opportunity to respond will come in their opening Premier League fixture of the 2026/2027 season.

The Cityzens are scheduled to face Bournemouth on Sunday, August 23, 2026, with Maresca’s side aiming to begin their league campaign with a victory.

After the disappointment against Arsenal, Manchester City will be determined to deliver a much-improved performance at the start of their Premier League journey.

A convincing result against Bournemouth would provide an immediate response to the Community Shield setback and give Maresca’s squad an opportunity to restore confidence.

The pressure will be on Manchester City to bounce back quickly, and the opening Premier League fixture could provide the perfect stage for Maresca and his players to show that the Community Shield defeat was only a temporary setback.
