Federico Dimarco, the left-back for the Italian national team, has been forced to withdraw from the national training camp following medical assessments that revealed he has not fully recovered from a physical issue. This paves the way for Matteo Ruggeri, currently playing for Aston Villa, to join the squad in Dimarco’s place.
Upcoming Matches for Italy
The Italian squad, known as Gli Azzurri, convened at Coverciano on Sunday evening to prepare for a series of upcoming matches in the Nations League. Italy is slated to face Belgium on September 25, Turkey on September 28, France on October 2, and then Turkey again on October 5. These fixtures mark the beginning of Roberto Mancini’s renewed tenure as the head coach of the national team.
Mancini had previously named a roster of 34 players for the training camp, including the debuts of nine newcomers. However, modifications to the squad were necessary before the commencement of the international calendar.
In addition to Dimarco, Bryan Cristante had also opted to withdraw due to physical concerns, with Samuele Ricci taking his place.
Injury Updates and Squad Adjustments
Initially, Dimarco had arrived at Coverciano ready to train with his teammates. Nevertheless, after undergoing a medical evaluation, the team’s medical staff confirmed that the Inter Milan defender was not fit enough to participate in the forthcoming matches. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) issued a statement saying, “Following a medical check at Coverciano, Inter defender Federico Dimarco, who has not recovered from his ongoing issue with his club, will not be available for the upcoming national team agenda and will leave the training camp in the next few hours.”
This decision means Dimarco must return to his club to continue his recovery process. He was anticipated to play a crucial role in the defensive lineup under Mancini’s guidance.
To fill Dimarco’s void, Mancini turned to Ruggeri to stepped into the role. Ruggeri, who has previously played for Atalanta, is currently making waves in the Premier League with Aston Villa. The FIGC confirmed this addition, stating, “As a replacement, Roberto Mancini has called up Aston Villa’s Matteo Ruggeri.” Now, Ruggeri is part of the Italian squad that will compete in four Nations League fixtures.
This addition gives Mancini more options in the wing-back department, especially after Dimarco’s confirmed absence. Before this, Cristante had also pulled out of the squad due to injury and was replaced by Ricci from Como.
Mancini has marked his return to the national team with an infusion of fresh talent, including nine new players in his first selection. Among those are Michael Kayode, Antonio Vergara, Alessandro Romano, Issa Doumbia, and Mohamed Ali Zoma.
