Michael Carrick is facing a defining moment in his Manchester United career. With results continuing to disappoint, the trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea could become a crucial opportunity for the English manager to prove that he remains the right man to lead the club.
Manchester United have struggled to find consistency throughout the 2026/27 season. Defeats against Como in the Champions League and Bournemouth in the Premier League have extended their winless run to eight matches in all competitions.
Despite the disappointing results, the club’s management has yet to make a final decision about Carrick’s future. However, patience is unlikely to last forever, and the meeting with Chelsea could represent one of his final chances to turn things around.
The Premier League fixture is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 19:30 WIB. To improve United’s chances of getting a positive result, Carrick may need to make four important changes.
1. Resolve His Disagreement With Bruno Fernandes
One of Carrick’s most important tasks is rebuilding his relationship with captain Bruno Fernandes.
Tensions reportedly emerged after Fernandes criticised the team’s tactics following Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat against Como. The disagreement appeared to have consequences when Carrick left the Portuguese midfielder out of the starting lineup for the subsequent match against Bournemouth.
However, dropping a player of Fernandes’ quality did little to solve United’s problems. The team continued to struggle creatively and eventually suffered another defeat.
The situation is particularly important because Fernandes remains one of United’s most influential attacking players. His vision, passing range and ability to create opportunities make him central to the team’s attacking structure.
Reports suggest that Carrick and Fernandes have since addressed their differences through discussions during the week. The midfielder could therefore return to the starting lineup against Chelsea.
Carrick has previously demonstrated his ability to get the best out of Fernandes. Under his guidance, the midfielder produced a record-breaking Premier League assist campaign and won the PFA Player of the Year award last season.
Restoring trust between manager and captain could be an important first step towards improving the team’s performances.
2. Find an Alternative to Diogo Dalot at Left-Back
Manchester United’s left-back position has become another tactical concern.
Luke Shaw has struggled with injuries, limiting his availability throughout the campaign. United also failed to secure a suitable replacement during the summer transfer window, leaving Carrick with limited options.
The manager has responded by using Diogo Dalot on the left side of defence. However, the experiment has not delivered the desired results, particularly when the Portuguese defender is expected to provide attacking width and support going forward.
Carrick may need to consider a different approach against Chelsea.
Marcus Rashford could be an alternative option if United want greater pace and attacking threat from the left flank. His ability to carry the ball and exploit space could give the team another route towards the opposition penalty area.
Another possibility would be adjusting the defensive structure. Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui could be given different responsibilities within a back-three system when United have possession.
Rather than continuing with an arrangement that has produced inconsistent results, Carrick needs to find a solution that gives the team better balance.
3. Give Manchester United’s Academy Talents More Opportunities
United’s senior players have struggled to deliver consistent performances, creating an opportunity for younger members of the squad to make an impact.
Shea Lacey is one academy graduate who could benefit from greater involvement. The youngster impressed during Manchester United’s Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton and has also made two substitute appearances in recent matches.
Carrick has several other young options available, including Harry Amass, Jack Fletcher, Jariyah Shah and Jim Thwaites.
Amass, in particular, could offer an alternative at left-back. He has already recorded two first-team appearances this season, giving him some experience at senior level.
Introducing academy players would not automatically solve United’s problems, but it could provide fresh energy and competition within the squad.
There is also a potential psychological benefit. Young players often view opportunities in the first team as a chance to prove themselves, especially when established names are struggling for form.
Carrick must be careful not to place excessive pressure on inexperienced players. However, giving deserving academy talents meaningful minutes could be a useful alternative when senior options are not delivering.
4. Bring Back Manchester United’s Counter-Attacking Strength
Perhaps the biggest challenge for Carrick is finding the right tactical identity.
Since receiving the permanent managerial position, his tactical adjustments have not produced the expected improvement. United have struggled to maintain a balance between attacking ambition and defensive organisation.
One possible solution would be returning to a more direct counter-attacking approach.
A 4-4-2 defensive structure could help United close spaces, protect the central areas and remain organised without the ball. Instead of constantly trying to dominate possession, the team could focus on winning possession and quickly exploiting gaps left by the opposition.
That approach could be particularly useful against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
With Benjamin Sesko unavailable, Fernandes could operate closer to Bryan Mbeumo in attack. Meanwhile, Rashford and Amad Diallo could provide pace from wide positions, offering options for quick transitions.
The key would be making sure that United remain compact when defending and move forward with purpose when opportunities appear.
Trying to control every phase of the game may not be the most realistic approach for a team currently struggling for confidence. A more disciplined strategy could give Carrick a better chance of securing a result.
Chelsea Test Could Define Carrick’s Future
Michael Carrick still has an opportunity to change the direction of Manchester United’s season, but time is running out.
Resolving the situation with Fernandes, finding a better left-back solution, trusting academy prospects and restoring the team’s counter-attacking threat could all help improve United’s performances.
None of these changes guarantees victory against Chelsea. However, they could give the team a clearer tactical identity and improve its chances of competing.
For Carrick, the objective at Stamford Bridge is straightforward: deliver a performance that demonstrates progress and, more importantly, secure a positive result.
Another setback could make his position increasingly difficult to defend. The Chelsea match may therefore become much more than an ordinary Premier League fixture for the Manchester United manager.
