Luciano Spalletti, the coach of Juventus, recently shared his thoughts following the team’s narrow 2-1 victory over AZ Alkmaar. After the match, he identified two critical areas needing improvement for his squad.
Juventus’ Performance Overview
On the early hours of the following day, Juventus traveled to the Netherlands to face Eredivisie representatives AZ Alkmaar in the fourth match of the 2026/2027 UEFA Europa League. The first half was a showcase of Juventus’ dominant play, highlighted by two goals, one from Teun Koopmeiners and another from Randal Kolo Muani. However, as the second half unfolded, Juventus’ performance dipped significantly, allowing the home side to capitalize on their weaknesses. Mexx Meerdink scored a late goal, narrowing the gap to 2-1.
During a post-match interview, Spalletti expressed disappointment over his team’s lackluster performance in the second half. He lamented that if Juventus had managed to secure a third goal, AZ Alkmaar would not have posed any threat. “In European competitions, every team plays with conviction and consistency. Had the match lasted just five minutes longer, we likely would not have secured the win,” Spalletti remarked on the official UEFA website. He continued, “We should have been able to add a third goal. Matches like these reveal our strength and quality to compete at this level.”
Issues to Address
Spalletti further criticized his team for failing to maintain their composure in the second half while AZ Alkmaar began to take control of the game. He noted that Juventus should have resisted more effectively to prevent any openings for their opponents. “We were too defensive and should have performed significantly better in the closing minutes. We conceded because we failed to make decisive choices. Not making a decision is worse than making a wrong one,” he concluded.
Following their narrow victory against AZ Alkmaar, Spalletti acknowledged the overall performance of Juventus and commended the efforts of his players. The team, now back in Turin, is gearing up for their upcoming fixture against Fiorentina, where they aim for another win. The Lady Old Lady, as Juventus is often affectionately called, looks to continue building momentum as they prepare for this important match.
In their previous encounter, Koopmeiners netted a goal against his former team, aiding Juventus in securing three vital points in the Europa League standings. Spalletti’s insights highlight the need for improvement as Juventus progresses in their campaign, ensuring they remain competitive in both domestic and European tournaments.
