In a thrilling Women’s Super League encounter, Tottenham Hotspur snatched a last-minute point against Aston Villa, thanks to Beth England’s stoppage-time header. The 2-2 draw came after a back-and-forth battle where Spurs led early, but Villa looked set to claim all three points late on, only for England to deliver a dramatic equalizer in the dying moments.

Tottenham Take Early Lead

The game kicked off with Aston Villa taking control from the start, showcasing their attacking intent. Rachel Daly, the talismanic captain for Villa, thought she had given her team the lead in the 7th minute when she volleyed a powerful shot past Spurs goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer. However, Villa’s celebrations were short-lived as the goal was ruled out for offside, much to the disappointment of the home fans at Villa Park.

Despite Villa’s dominance in possession, it was Tottenham who took advantage of a defensive lapse. In the 33rd minute, Spurs were awarded a penalty when Drew Spence was brought down in the box by Villa defender Paula Tomas. Finnish midfielder Eveliina Summanen stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net from the penalty spot, putting Spurs ahead and giving her team an unexpected lead. The goal marked Summanen’s first league goal since last October.

The first half ended with Villa pressing for an equalizer, but Tottenham’s defense, anchored by Spencer’s impressive goalkeeping, managed to hold firm despite waves of Villa attacks.

Villa Fight Back in the Second Half

The second half saw much of the same, with Aston Villa dictating the tempo and pushing forward in search of an equalizer. Daly, determined to make up for her earlier disallowed goal, continued to be a constant threat for Spurs’ backline, linking up well with the midfield and pushing the Spurs defense deep into their own half.

Villa’s pressure finally paid off in the 78th minute when substitute Adriana Leon brought them level. Daly played a crucial role once again, providing the assist with a well-timed pass that found Leon in space.

Just 10 minutes later, Daly herself found the net, this time legally. The forward rose highest to meet Lucy Parker’s pinpoint cross and headed the ball over Spencer, who had been struggling with a minor injury after Leon’s equalizer. The goal, coming in the 88th minute, appeared to have sealed the win for Villa, and the home fans erupted in joy, sensing that their team had secured all three points.

Beth England Saves Spurs with Late Heroics

However, Tottenham refused to give in. Despite Villa’s late lead, Spurs continued to press, showing resilience and determination. The introduction of Amanda Nilden added a new dimension to their attack, and it was her inch-perfect cross in the sixth minute of added time that led to the equalizing goal.

Beth England, who had been relatively quiet throughout much of the game, rose to the occasion when her team needed her most. Timing her run perfectly, she met Nilden’s cross with a powerful header that soared past Villa goalkeeper Anna Leat and into the back of the net. The goal stunned Villa Park and secured Tottenham a hard-earned point in a match they had seemed destined to lose.
