While the team’s World Cup squad isn’t yet sure, no one will dispute that they have a fine crop of players to call on and are under the excellent leadership of a good head coach in Louis Van Gaal, and they breezed it through the World Cup qualifying stage. Although many were slightly alarmed when the team lost to Turkey in the first match of the qualifying process, the Netherlands quickly showed that they were better stock than that in subsequent games. Of the nine remaining games, they won seven and drew two matches, scoring an astounding 33 goals. Many eyes would be on Memphis Depay, as he was spectacular during the qualifying stage. He had 18 goal contributions, scoring 12 times and providing six assists. Should the likes of Justin Bijlow, Matthijs de Ligt, Virgil Van Dijk, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Frenkie de Jong stay in spectacular form, we have no doubt that they’ll cruise through the group stage as well.
What To Expect From The Other Teams
Even though the Dutch team seems to have all their ducks in a row this time, their group isn’t easy. So, should they switch off at any point, they can expect to bid farewell to their dreams of World Cup glory. Senegal is one of the teams most likely to give the Dutch squad problems. With an array of stars that almost match each other perfectly, it would not be wise for the Netherlands to enter the field without adequately accounting for every variable. With Edouard Mendy behind the sticks and supported by the experienced defender, Kalidou Koulibaly, Depay might have difficulty slipping goals into the net. Sadio Mane can also be unstoppable when he puts his mind to it, so Van Dijk already has worked out for him. Qatar and Ecuador won’t be easy to overlook either; the former has a home advantage, while the latter has a fine mix of young and experienced players. Both would be looking to prove a point and perform stunning offsets.
